How to do it.

Subj: Websites are for prospect, not employees.

Dear Boss,

I know that our IT department now has control of the website, but please let me help them with keywords and search engine registration. For example, it is not enough to just list our own name as the Title Field on the homepage. That is the first thing search engines look at, so why don't we put some key statement and words that people might use to search on for our products and services. And use proper detailed Titles on every page.

And someone really needs to work on the other hidden Description, Keywords and Metatag fields. This is not hard, but it does take someone with a good sense of how people find us - by product, application area and geographic location.

Furthermore, there are many other places to put descriptive tags, including on alternate names for all graphics and many fields.

Finally, I notice our new graphic designer takes some of our key statements from the home page and has put them into fancy fonts. Of course, most browsers don't have these fonts so he has put them out there as graphics images instead. Looks good, even though it loads a bit slower. But, search engines do not see these words now! They only see text.

Yes, it might make a slightly different impression to our employees and existing clients, but they are already sold. Aren't new prospects our most important constituency?

Sincerely,

Your Marketing Manager.

PS We will also continue to score better with search engines if we have content that changes on the home page every week or so, and if we have lots of people linking to us. Which probably means we have to reciprocate via our partners and other link pages.
