Subj: Direct Mail is Cheaper First Class

Dear Boss,

I heard that you were getting complaints from accounting again about us using first class postage on our direct mail cards. Of course we were. It is cheaper overall. After all, when we use first class stamps, the U.S. postal service is kind enough to check and return all mislabeled mail to us. Free of charge!

We have invested some real time and money in acquiring new prospect lists. But even the best of these is only 90% accurate on the day we get it. So using first class mail ensures we don't waste future money and time chasing false leads. Plus it gives us the correct address in many cases. In other words, a real prospect, instead of a throw away. Worth real money. We only have to sell two more prospects to pay for the whole campaign's printing and mailing costs.

Sincerely,

Your Marketing Manager

PS At least this time I think they appreciate why we use real stamps (that our mail house automatically applies) … I have proven to them it increases response rate at least half a percent.
